President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid a glowing tribute to the late Alhaji Ganiyu Kolapo Oseni, describing him as a trusted political mentor, loyal ally, fearless democracy advocate and one of the key figures who shaped his political career.
In a statement issued by the State House on Friday, the President said he received the news of Oseni’s death with profound sadness but noted that the late elder statesman’s enduring legacy would continue to inspire future generations.
Tinubu described Oseni as a visionary administrator, accomplished statesman and progressive politician whose exceptional leadership and unwavering commitment to public service distinguished him throughout his lifetime. He said Oseni made invaluable contributions to the political development of Lagos State and Nigeria, leaving behind a legacy worthy of emulation.
The President recalled that Oseni played a significant role during the Second Republic as the Organising Secretary of the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) in Lagos State under the leadership of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo. He also highlighted Oseni’s pioneering role in establishing the Lagos State Printing Corporation, noting that the corporation recently honoured him by dedicating its central mosque in his name.
Reflecting on their long-standing relationship, Tinubu said Oseni was much more than a political associate, describing him as a leader, friend, comrade and brother. According to the President, it was Oseni who introduced him into active politics and stood firmly behind him during his successful campaigns for the Lagos West Senatorial seat and later as Governor of Lagos State.
Tinubu also remembered their joint efforts in the struggle to restore democracy in Nigeria, saying they worked together alongside other pro-democracy activists in defending the outcome of the June 12, 1993 presidential election won by the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola. He described Oseni as a courageous defender of democratic values who remained steadfast throughout the fight against military rule.
The President revealed that Oseni continued to offer him guidance over the years and was among those who blessed his presidential ambition when he declared his intention to contest the 2023 election. Although Oseni had relocated to the United States and was unable to participate actively in the campaign, Tinubu said his prayers and encouragement remained invaluable.
According to the President, some of the reforms currently being implemented by his administration were inspired by ideas and discussions he shared over the years with the late elder statesman. He said both men were united by a common vision of building a stronger, more prosperous and democratic Nigeria.
Expressing appreciation for Oseni’s lifetime of service, Tinubu thanked him for his immense contributions to Lagos State, Nigeria and the progressive political movement. In an emotional tribute, he lamented the loss of a trusted confidant, declaring that “a brother and a bosom friend has fallen” and describing the late politician as “an Iroko among us.”
While mourning his passing, the President thanked Almighty Allah for granting Oseni a long and fulfilled life and for blessing him with children to sustain his legacy. Tinubu and the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, prayed for Allah to grant the late elder statesman eternal rest in Aljanna and asked God to comfort his wife, children and the entire Oseni family.
